Description
The Liberty Scarf by Aimie K. Runyan, J’nell Ciesielski and Rachel McMillan is a triad of love stories with points of connection between them. A beautifully designed silk scarf from Liberty’s of London is a talisman in all three novellas, set against the ravages of war-torn France between 1917-1918. In the first story we meet Iris, who works for the Liberty Company and designed the bright and hopeful pattern for a new scarf. In the second story, a long way from home, Geneviève is working with the Americans as a bilingual telephone operator. And in the third story, Clara is a nurse in a palace pressed into use as a hospital for the wounded. All three women have a connection to a particular scarf, as each of the silk squares is endowed with emotional memories and attachments. Sweet romances unfold for all three women even as hundreds of maimed and traumatized individuals cope with the impact of war. Much like their previous collaboration, the authors of The Castle Keepers have done a masterful job of integrating interesting historical research into their timely narratives about the importance of hope and beauty in the midst of desolation and despair.
